After a car accident that killed her parents, seven-year-old Grietje is taken in by her aunt, a widow, who runs a farm in the Kempen region with her two sons. The youngest son, Jan, is a fourteen-year-old rascal. A childlike friendship soon blossomed between Grietje and Jan, while the eldest son, Louis, was attracted to Marie, the young maid employed by his mother.
